Beverly Joubert Instagram – There is nothing easy about moving elephants. From carefully selecting the animals to be moved based on endless hours of careful observation to the mammoth task of darting the herd members and hoisting them by crane onto the back of a flatbed, all the while ensuring that every precaution is taken to ensure their wellbeing. Translocations of this magnitude are not entered into lightly and it requires the combined effort of highly trained and dedicated teams to pull it off. Under ideal circumstances, conservationists wouldn’t have to carry out these kinds of difficult interventions, but as wildlife populations continue to be forced into smaller and smaller habitats, it becomes a necessary part of the complex challenge of conservation.
These shots were taken during an elephant translocation that forms part of the @greatplainsfoundation’s Project ReWild Zambezi initiative. The aim is to move elephants and other animals from overpopulated areas to @greatplainsconservation’s private Sapi Reserve on the Zambezi River. It’s a monumental collective effort that will help boost biodiversity and pave the way for future mass wildlife translocations in the future.
