Beverly Joubert Instagram – A giraffe is never truly alone. Look closely, and you’ll often spot small, feathered companions—oxpeckers—clinging to its patterned coat. These industrious birds have mastered the art of living off large mammals, feasting on burrowing parasites like ticks and fleas. For the most part, it’s a symbiotic relationship: the giraffe tolerates the fluttering visitors in exchange for a little pest control. But nature is rarely simple. Oxpeckers don’t just remove parasites—they also feed on blood, sometimes plucking at open wounds and slowing the healing process. For this giraffe, the constant pecking is both a relief and an annoyance. The wild is full of these delicate balances, where survival is a dance of give and take.
