15 years ago. My first ever show in Stratford will forever feel like yesterday mainly because it was an incredibly unforgettable experience. The first preview on this day was only meant to be a standby show but 10 minutes before curtain up, suddenly it was me. No time to think, just pure adrenaline. I remember standing in the wings, heart pounding, surrounded by the most supportive company anyone could ask for. The cast, crew, creatives all wrapping me in calm when my tiny brain was doing cartwheels. @jjosiewalker shouting “you’ve got this kid!” Peter Howe, my brother, sifting his way through the backstage crowd to make sure we did our extremely complicated and very strongly worked on handshake before it was go time. Not a day goes by where I don’t wish we could have done that just one more time. My mum racing to try and watch my debut and making it just in time to see my bow❤️ That first night changed everything. I learnt so much, including how to not fall off the stage… (yes, that did happen, and they still tell the story🫢) What we made in Stratford was magic. Every single person involved gave so much of themselves and with the band roaring behind us, the audience believed in a little girl’s story. And then London happened. Matilda grew, and so did we. Being the youngest recipients of the Olivier Award will forever be one of the proudest and most surreal moments of our lives. Standing there in a dress my mum carefully picked out from Next, not quite tall enough for the microphone, completely mesmerised. Fifteen years on, I’m still beyond proud to have been a part of something that changed so many lives. @Cleodemetriou and I actually ended up moving to Manchester together 4 years ago, and just this weekend she was on my sofa eating banana bread lol (receipts attached). The bonds formed in that rehearsal room and on that stage are truly unbreakable. We created something extraordinary and to see it still going strong today fills me with nothing but love, pride, and gratitude. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat ♥️
