✨️✨️I see how much Degrassi shaped our girlhood as immigrant daughters. Back then, my sisters and I rushed home after school and those episodes became our window into a world that rarely mirrored our own. Representation in the arts was not something we were taught to expect. Seeing Alli, played by Melinda Shankar, felt revolutionary in ways we could not name at the time. She was the Canadian Brown Gyal on screen carrying the stories so many of us held quietly. She was smart and stylish, curious and complicated. She showed us that brown girls could take up space, have ambition, and still be worthy of being seen. That mattered more than we realized. Adorning Melinda for her special day last month felt like stepping into a chapter my younger self could only dream of. Full circle in the most tender way. Outfit inspo: tradition and history. Gma’s white dress was goals and I tried to recreate it with a modern touch. Fun fact- my mom wore the same sari she wore for her pre wedding maticoor night to mine. She was dressed by her best friend (both pictured then and now) who flew over from nyc to help us with all of the events. 🥹 I’ve learnt so much about the rituals /my Guyanese Hindu culture in this process and I feel so blessed to have had the right souls with us to guide the magic. I could not have done any of it without their help. 🙏🏽
