Hello, everyone! It’s been a while. I turned 58. Started a social media break on July 28. Got Covid. Shaved off my hair. And I am in full writing mode for my fourth book. See my newsletter FEMINIST GIANT for a look into what I’m working on. My social media break continues as I work on my book. In two weeks, I’m holding my first online course. Space is limited. Registration link for tickets in my stories and on FEMINIST GIANT. A belated THANK YOU to all who sent me birthday greetings. Love and solidarity! 💜✊🏽❤️ Fuck Israel and all who arm and support its genocide of Palestinians. 📷 @rerutled

For decades, menopause has been defined by silence, discussed in whispers and excluded from policy, culture, and research. Yet half the population will experience it.. Writer and activist Mona Eltahawy (@monaeltahawy) says that narrative is overdue for change. As the editor of Bloody Hell, an anthology of “adventures in menopause from around the world”, she argues this stage can be a site of power, rage, and renewal. From Riot Women, a TV series where midlife chaos becomes punk rebellion, to the novel Broken Light by Joanne Harris (@joannechocolat), where menopausal transformation turns supernatural, artists and writers are recasting menopause as something creative rather than shameful. Across generations, this shift is challenging one of patriarchy’s most persistent myths: that a woman’s worth is tied to her youth or fertility. What if menopause isn’t a closing chapter, but the start of a different kind of visibility? #Menopause #MenopauseAwareness #MenopauseAwarenessMonth
“Because you no longer exist, you will do anything for attention. You may shave your head or dye your hair or wear striped stockings or scream at complete strangers,” poet Mary Ruefle writes in her essay on menopause. I read that and thought “What the fuck, Mary!” I feel seen in all the wrong ways, which is ironic given that Reufle is writing about the ways menopause renders one invisible. In my first online course Menopause in Literature and Popular Culture, I’ll be tracing the ways menopause has appeared and evolved—or not!—in popular culture (TV, film, social media, etc) as well as poetry and literature. The three-part seminar starts on Sept. 16 at 7pm Eastern time (NYC). Join me! Register via link in bio, story, and FEMINIST GIANT.
