Sienna Guillory Instagram – Broken English @londonfilmfestival premiere
This beautiful film explores the ease with which Marianne Faithful settled into the collective consciousness as an overtly sexual, hedonistic vampire preying on talented men and destroying their decent moral fibre. How does one decide if the way a person is portrayed by the media of the time should be perceived as really true? And why it matters so very much.
I see a person that seeks connection – Broken English (the song) she sings, “what are you fighting for? It’s not my security”.
To me this song is terribly sad, it’s about someone she loves who’s very sophisticated with words and theories because they can’t understand that they are at war with themselves, and trying to intellectualise their perception to find meaning, but that the deeper the language gets the more alienating it is. This person she sings about is unable to speak their truth, or the truth she wants so desperately to hear. It’s very beautiful. Or maybe it’s just a song about homeland security…but it moves me and that’s the point. She moves me. Her words, her yearning, her overflowing love.
The album of poetry. I mean what doesn’t scream a yearning for connection more than being grateful for words that somehow express the inexpressible power and sensitivity of experience?
I loved her choice of poems in her final album with Warren Evans. She feels very deeply and almost apologetically for the men she loved. Like loving them so deeply was somehow a hindrance to them.
