Zosia Mamet Instagram – When a Windpuff Becomes More

🛑Case Study: Don’t Ignore the Signs

This mare presented with a pronounced windpuff. A windpuff is accumulation of excess fluid or synovitis within the distal flexor tendon sheath . The mare was noticeably “off” in her movement. While many windpuffs are harmless, this case shows exactly why monitoring is so important.

👨🏽‍⚕️In this video, Dr. Porter uses ultrasound to evaluate what’s happening beneath the surface. As he explains to the client, the imaging reveals what the external swelling was trying to tell us and that this wasn’t just a simple benign wind puff issue anymore.

Following the diagnosis, the mare received targeted medication into the affected area to address the inflammation and a regimen of cold laser therapy 5 days a week to support her recovery.

🐴The Takeaway: This is a perfect example of why we always recommend keeping an eye on windpuffs, even when conventional wisdom says to “leave them alone.” Changes in size, accompanying lameness, or any sign that your horse is “off” warrant a closer look.

⏰Early intervention makes all the difference. What you see on the outside doesn’t always tell the full story of what’s happening on the inside. Check back this week to learn more about windpuffs.
