I just got to meet and shoot the incredible Ken Burns / @kenlburns, National Treasure and documentary-maker, as part of the goings-on here in Lexington as the 250th anniversary of the revolution. The celebrations draw nigh (April 19th is the day: this Saturday). So do the protests and the explosions of expression.
My fierce little hometown is dealing with rumors of Trump showing up (untrue, as far as I’ve heard), the Proud Boys showing up (untrue, as far as I’ve heard), but WHO CARES?!? We got KEN BURNS!!!
He showed us clips from his new (stunning) @pbs documentary about the American Revolution, did some interviews with the Lexington and local press, and took questions from one of the 8th grade history teachers (🥹). I also got stopped in the hallway by my own senator for a selfie (hi @senatormikebarrett!) and got to run into my fave Lexington rogue ingenue Sabrina Bhattacharjya (aka @lexington250), who will probably be president or something someday. Watch out.
Ken was joined by his co-filmmaker @sarahbotstein) and historian Rick Atkinson and all were the epitome of class. The doc – and surprise! some of the soundtrack was by my friend @zoecello! – reduced me to blurry tears several times. The resonance between that moment in 1775 and now…I can’t even. Confusion. Tyranny. Gaslighting empires falling. Families torn apart. Sound familiar? WE GOT THIS, AMERICA. It’s time to snap to. And also? Ken spoke about the dangers in romanticizing all this. We cannot. It was stolen land to begin with. Now what?
I’ll be up at 4am with tons of pals and neighborhood kids to see the Lexington reenactment on Saturday, is anyone going??
