For the past two days, people have been sending me this photo that was taken of me two years ago by Amall Ishak at Dahshur Residence and seems to be circulating widely since Thursday. I have beautiful memories of this shoot and the resulting photo was later turned into a gorgeous charcoal drawing by artist @nahedshaker . I realized that it was initially posted on a page highlighting traditional photos of clothing from the Mena Region. However, the reaction has escalated into a very racially stained conversation and debate about how Egyptian women “should” look and suddenly the Saudis entered the debate and now it seems to be an all out racially charged fight on twitter. What a horrible way to turn what was a great memory for me into something so politically tarnished and reeking of racism. I can’t believe we are still having these conversations in 2024.
