It’s this Scorpio’s bday 🎈 My sister calls 33 “your Jesus year”. My good friend Adam says it takes a few years to ease yourself into a new decade. I feel that so much. I started a gratitude journal about 5 weeks ago. Everywhere I look I feel full. For what’s here and what isn’t (but contributed to who I am now). I can’t wait to let go of more. There’s a lot of talk online about what “Latin representation” should look like. But so often we end up repeating the same tropes—broken English to prove a point, a random Spanish word thrown in, or a quick cultural stereotype to check a box. Lily, in Adventure Tom, isn’t that. And I’m really proud of that. I’ve played many iterations of a Latina. There is nothing wrong with any of them. But I think this depiction: a second/third-generation Mexican-American where the identity shows in authentic storytelling and history, is the best way forward because it humanizes us. The danger of identity-politics in art is that instead of being allowed to be full fledged humans with normal conflict, we end up justifying our existence. I love that as a Mexican-American woman, I knew Lily was Mexican-American the second I read this scene. The subtle rupture between her and her parents generational experience, and the inherited ambition they don’t fully see. That, to me, feels honest and exciting. I’m proud to have helped bring that to screen. Thank you forever Miguel for letting me be Lily, and for representing us so thoughtfully. I really hope we keep moving in this direction 💛
