Bianca Golden Instagram – When you hear a story about someone going from the projects, to millions, and back to the projects, we label it failure. We ask, what went wrong?
But what if what looked like a dream to us was never a dream at all, just a survival strategy handed to a kid too early and carried like a responsibility instead of a choice?
Iāve been following Sebastian Telfairās story through his documentary āFinal Days of Freedomā, which takes us on a journey of his final weeks before he transitions from legendary high school basketball phenom, to 13th overall NBA draft pick, to millionaire, back to the projects in Coney Island as he prepares for a six month jail sentence for violating the conditions of his supervised release tied to a healthcare fraud case.
I donāt doubt that Sebastian loved basketball. I donāt doubt that he appreciated what it did for his family. But I canāt help but wonder if it functioned less as a dream and more as a survival tactic. So when people say he fell off or judged him going back to the hood, I wonder if theyāve considered that maybe he returned to the one place that never asked him to be anything other than himself.
It doesnāt erase loss or dismiss any of his actions, but Sebastian DID make it out. He reached heights most people will never touch. But we spend so much time talking about escaping the hood & almost never about the community that welcomes you back if you return empty handed or just short of your goal. When he went home, there was no shame. No judgment. Just familiarity, love, and belonging.
Charlemagne recently said we all carry toolboxes and do the best we can with what we have. The problem is we try to use old keys to open new doors. Sebastian seemed like he was using his old keys that helped him survive in environments that required him to thrive.
And maybe thatās the part we missā¦
You can always go back home, not because you failed, but because home is the place that still holds you when survival is all you know. The real question isnāt why he returned. Itās why we never taught him how to just live once survival wasnāt the goal anymore.
