Carol Vorderman Instagram – Honorary Doctorate of Science at Swansea University
I was absolutely thrilled on Thursday to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science at @swanseauni . I can’t tell you just how much this means to me. ❤️
I’ve had a long connection with Swansea, going right back to when they took up the mantle to support Further Maths A Level across schools in Wales, after I highlighted in a Westminster government report just how well the Further Maths Network worked in England. Wales didn’t have the equivalent at the time, so this connection goes back nearly 15 years.
And for the last four years, and continuing on, I’ve been paying it forward. Every year I donate £20,000 to the maths department for nine bursaries for maths undergraduates. Each one receives £2,000 a year across their three years, and they’re aimed at students from a similar background to mine. I was a free school meals kid at a comprehensive in North Wales, and the effort and love my teachers, and then @cambridgeuniversity, gave me despite that background changed everything.
So if I can help in any small way to do the same for others, I will. I’ll share more about the bursaries, and how you, or someone you know, can apply in my next post. ✅
