Dr. Contessa Metcalfe Instagram – As women—especially Black women—knowing how to protect ourselves is not about fear, aggression, or ego. It’s about preparedness, discipline, and respect for the responsibility that comes with firearms.
I’ll be honest: I was definitely rusty.
It’s been a long time since I sharpened my skills. But the best thing to do when I know my skills are deteriorating is to get back to it, practice, and improve on what the military taught me. Skill fade is real—and pretending otherwise is dangerous. Accountability is power.
Why this matters:
• Black women are disproportionately impacted by gun violence, often in domestic and community settings
• Black women are also one of the fastest-growing groups of lawful firearm owners
• Proper training, regular practice, and gun safety education significantly reduce accidental injuries and misuse
Gun ownership without training is reckless.
Training without continued practice is incomplete.
And safety is not optional—it’s the foundation.
This is about:
✔️ Knowing the law
✔️ Safe handling and storage
✔️ Situational awareness
✔️ Muscle memory and discipline
✔️ Confidence rooted in competence—not bravado
Protection is a skill. Skills require maintenance.
So I’m practicing. I’m sharpening. I’m staying responsible.
Because empowerment also means knowing when to retrain.
