Matt, you were so much more than just a manager to me – you were a mentor and a friend. From the first time we met, it just felt easy with you. We shared the same humour, and you always brought lightness and positivity wherever you were. You created an environment where I could perform at my best and pushed me to see the potential in myself that you already saw. I’ll always be grateful for that. With your guidance, I went on to win not just my first WSL title, but my second too.
You were one of the biggest advocates for the women’s game, driving it forward when not many cared. But above everything, your love for your family and football always stood out the most.
I’ll always remember your terrible one-liners that still made me laugh, our Liverpool away trips, sitting in hotel bars late watching the boxing, sharing our clueless opinions between rounds like we knew what we were talking about, and the way we’d end up laughing until our sides ached. You always saw the good in everyone – and Matt, I always saw the good in you.
You were kind, caring, warm, full of energy, and you had that infectious cackle of a laugh no one will ever forget.
Matt, I’ll miss you deeply. Thank you for everything – for the laughs, the lessons, and the memories. Let’s never forget to tell the people around us how much they mean, and to look out for one another 🤍 YNWA
