今回Newtroがリバイバルした楽曲は、1986年にリリースされた中森明菜の代表曲で、当時の日本の音楽シーンを牽引した名曲「DESIRE -情熱-」
エッジの効いたサウンドと強烈な存在感を持つこの楽曲は、約40年を経た今でも多くのリスナーの記憶に深く刻まれ続けています。
今回Newtroが挑んだのは、この名曲を “ジャンルや世代を超えて響くモダンなアレンジへと大胆に生まれ変わらせること”。
再解釈を担ったのは、サックスと鍵盤を武器にジャズとエレクトロを横断するユニットLE GRAND RETOUR。
ボーカルに中嶋イッキュウ（tricot／ジェニーハイ）を招いて、エレクトロとジャズが交錯するサウンドの中で、イッキュウの声が持つしなやかさと鋭さが際立ち、唯一無二の世界観を形成。

The track revived by Newtro this time is “DESIRE – Passion,” one of Akina Nakamori’s most iconic songs, originally released in 1986 and a defining force in Japan’s music scene of the era. With its sharp-edged sound and commanding presence, the song has remained deeply etched in listeners’ memories for nearly four decades.
Newtro’s challenge was to boldly transform this classic into a modern arrangement that resonates across genres and generations.
The reinterpretation is led by LE GRAND RETOUR, a unit that bridges jazz and electronic music through saxophone and keyboards. By reconstructing the song’s exotic intensity, they craft a daring soundscape that fuses minimalist rhythms, cutting electronic textures, and jazz-inspired improvisation. The quietly burning pulse of the low end and tension-filled saxophone phrases reveal “DESIRE” from an entirely new perspective.
Vocals are performed by Ikkyu Nakajima (tricot / Genie High). While honoring the power of the original melody, she takes an unconventional approach by translating its intensity into a delicate whisper-like delivery, expressing a new form of passion that emerges from within. Amid the intersection of electronic and jazz elements, her voice—both supple and sharp—stands out, shaping a truly distinctive sonic world.
