The end of the Dream of a Life Well Lived surprised many viewers. Geralt had died. Surely, this isn’t how his perfect life was meant to end! Witchers don’t die in their beds, Vesemir tells us. But what about men? Fathers? Lovers? The dream for Geralt is to have a full life — with Ciri, with Yennefer. To grow old, to grow more in love, and when the time comes, to live forever in stories and memories. He will, I think. This scene wasn’t intended to be shot this day. A cast member went down with an illness, and we had time to fill, so our amazing props department flew into action to create a wreath of purple flowers; set dec crafted a grave; armory flew in Geralt’s sword. And Freya… she had to access a level of emotion the day had not called for. She pulled it off! Everyone did.

There are aspects of Sapkowski’s novels that are difficult to explain to someone not steeped in the world. Nimue is one of them — a young girl who appears out of nowhere, very late in the game, who believes she has a pivotal role in this story. Sapkowski loves playing with timelines and POVs; it’s one of the many ways he keeps us on our toes as readers. And one of the hardest things to adapt for television! How do you introduce a new character from a completely different world and time, in S4, without any context, and tell your audience “Pay attention, this seems random but it’s important!” This is how the opening of 401 came about — what if the momentous task of reintroducing Geralt happened through the eyes of young Nimue (the spectacularly talented @eve.ridley) and storyteller Stribog (Clive Russell)? Win-win. Look carefully, though. The image here (with wooden Geralt and Yennefer dolls) never ended up onscreen. That’s because the opening sequence was crafted, and recrafted, and rewritten, and recreated until we were happy with it. On a rewatch, see if you can tell just how much Eve grew up over the course of the shoot!

We do everything we can do highlight our actors’ creativity and individualities within these specific roles — demonstrated nowhere more clearly than in choreography. Much like Anya, who brings her Indian heritage into the hand movements associated with spells, @maheshjadu utilizes a lot of tai chi practice into the physicality of Vilgefortz. In this sequence, during the Battle of Montecalvo, Vilgefortz often grounds himself and draws energy inward, before expelling magic toward Yennefer and the mages. I love the idea that the Continent is so enormous that in addition to shared skills from Aretuza and Ban Ard, the mages also bring in regional or cultural specificities that make them special and unique.
