From my speech:
“Celebrating the power and hope that arise from activists dedicating their lives to our collective survival comes with a responsibility: to do your part. To challenge your own way of seeing the world, your own mindset you are applying in the climate crisis. And to ask yourself which side of the story you are on – are you with those who are sleepwalking into the climate emergency, or are you part of those waking up the world?
The world does not need three perfect activists to save us — but of millions of people willing to take one step outside their comfort zone, and then another.
It is only then, that we realize: The planet does not need saving — but our relationship to the planet, and to one another does.
All of that, so that one day, we can look each other in the eyes again, honestly and consciously. Because we will have stopped exploiting the livelihoods of the many for the wealth of the few. Because we will have stopped destroying the future of the many for the convenience of the few. Because we will have stopped lying to ourselves about the responsibility we carry, whether we like it or not.
It is my deep honor and pleasure to award you, Vanessa, the German Sustainability Award. May this empower your incredible work, your voice, and your dedication — and remind everyone else who should be front and center in the stories we tell.”
