One moment I was guiding him across the ice, the next I was flat on my back on the hard, frozen surface. The impact knocked the wind out of me, and somewhere deep in my body, I knew something had broken. But instinct overrode everything else. Even as pain shot through my spine, I reached for my son, helping him up onto the red dog where he’d be safe. Then I lay there on the ice floor, unable to get myself up. Nobody saw me fall. The rink was quiet that day, sparse with skaters. In the emptiness, my crisis went unwitnessed. I screamed at my daughter to come help me, and with her help, I finally managed to stand.
