Hard to believe it’s been eight years since you left this place. You were gone long before that, slowly taken by a body that no longer answered to you and a mind that travelled you, without consent, further and further away from me. But even after all those years, I still remember you as a giant, bear of a man with a belly laugh that shook the room. You drove eight hours each way to get me to theater school in the summer, and two hours each way every week just to watch me play mediocre soccer. You didn’t know how to say you were proud of me, but I knew because you showed up. You didn’t know how to say “I love you” first, but I knew because of how you hugged me. You didn’t know how to tell me you missed me when I moved away but I knew by the way you answered when I called. Now I can’t tell you now how much I miss you, so I choose to believe you know by the way I remember you. It was never easy for you, you had your own demons you never wanted me to meet, but even with all you battled, I always knew your greatest fight was to be the best dad you could be. Thank you. Your grandchildren are just like you in all the ways you would want them to be and, at my best, I think you’d see yourself in me too. I miss you.
