Growing up in Adana as someone from Mardin—being a child of migration—means growing up without a safety net and taking an oath to succeed. Years ago, in 2009, there was a TV show called Korolar Çarpışıyor that received major media attention. Whichever competing city won would earn a brand-new school. I wanted so much to win a school for my Mardin.
We presented the true spirit of Mardin—singing in Kurdish, Arabic, and Turkish—and we won first place many times. We were so sure we would win. Yet even there, racist attitudes didn’t leave us alone. After our performances, people would wave flags and shout slogan-like words, but none of it discouraged us. Unfortunately, the final result depended on SMS voting. Even little kids selling mussels would message me saying, “Sister, I bought credit so I can send an SMS.”
We lost the competition—but nearly every friend from our choir went on to build a path in music. They perform on stage in Mardin now; they earn their living through their art. For me, that experience itself was a school.
