If you care at all about protecting LGBTQ youth or free speech and free expression on the internet, there’s a really shocking piece of legislation in congress right now that you need to know about.
It’s called the Kids Online Safety Act, KOSA for short, but don’t let the name fool you, according to every expert on LGBTQ rights, free speech, and many who actually work in child safety, this law would do the opposite of protecting kids.
Last year, the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, and X were hauled in front of congress by the supporters of the act.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn, claimed KOSA would help “protect minor children from the transgender in this culture.”
She also claimed that social media “is where children are being indoctrinated” seemingly into LGBTQ culture
Though lawmakers claim KOSA is about “protecting kids” it would actually endanger and isolate them. The bill would cut kids off from crucial information online about basically any controversial topics like abortion, gender affirming care, substance abuse, and even current events.
It will require that anyone using a social media platform provide their government ID. Which has terrifying implications for free speech. More than 100 human rights and LGBTQ groups have condemned the bill, saying it would endanger minors.
Not only that, but the government is also seeking to repeal Section 230, the landmark legislation that protects independent journalism and free speech online. They’re doing all of this claiming they’re “cracking down on big tech”, but in reality these laws are a massive gift to big tech and will drastically increase the amount of data tech companies can harvest on us and will entrench the power of Meta and Google.
