Alicia Garza Instagram – I’ll be honest — this was a weird ass year. Yes, it was hard in all the ways, yes, there was joy in all the ways, but I would say the theme for this year, for me, was discovery. This year I wasn’t the goo in the cocoon. This year I was the newly emerged butterfly learning how to use my wings, and remembering that I’ve always had them but this year I had to use them in new contexts. I prayed this year more than I’ve ever prayed in my whole damn life. I lost people I loved dearly. I learned to listen to signs and my gut, to wait for answers to unfold. I learned that what I know may be too early for many to understand, but I see what I see and I learned to trust that, even if it hadn’t quite materialized yet. The no’s that came from me were embodied for the first time in a long time — IYKYK. I said yes to shit that scared me, no to shit that wastes my time, and in this last gasp of 2025 I say —new year, more of me. Don’t ask me to come down to where you’re at.
