I was in the middle of preparing the Salomon Advanced Week, scheduled for early April in Greece.
One day, @erikahlstromsweden , our Swedish community manager, reached out. He asked if we could invite a Swedish athlete so I could get a closer look at her.
She had never raced abroad, but she was clearly dominating the scene in Sweden.
A bit later, while talking with @kilianjornet , I joked:
“By the way, a Swedish girl is joining us in Greece… I’m counting on you to give her a proper welcome 😅”
The event was held by the sea. Our Greek community manager, @nikoskosto Nikos Kostopoulos, had found an incredible spot: a hotel facing the Mediterranean, with trails starting right at the door and climbing straight into the mountains. It was perfect.
Athletes, engineers, community managers, and staff all arrived. We were getting ready for the first run.
@tinaemelie couldn’t stand still. She wanted to run, to play, to discover the mountains with the others. She rubbed her hands together, bounced on her toes, a huge smile on her face, her eyes sparkling.
We set off on a long climb.
She wasn’t in her comfort zone, but she kept pushing. She smiled. She refused to give in.
At the top, she looked at me and said:
“Now we can play 😅”
I replied: “Alright… after you 😁”
And then she launched into the descent. Full speed.
Her arms were everywhere, she jumped from rock to rock, laughing, shouting with joy.
I asked her to stop and wait for the others. She was red-faced, out of breath, but absolutely buzzing, ready to go again.
This time, I told her to follow Kilian.
Nothing scared her. She tucked in behind him and suddenly they were like two kids, hunting for the best lines, jumping higher and higher, pushing each other to go even faster 😅
Every run that week felt like that first day, and that same attitude was behind so many of the races she went on to destroy: Pikes Peak Marathon, Zegama, TNF 50 San Francisco, Mt Kinabalu, Ultraks, Transvulcania, the 90 km of Mont-Blanc, Giir di Mont, The Rut, Glencoe, Ultra Pireneu, KIMA, and many more.
