Begins as a public square named “sandy place” in the Persian language, used for public announcements and executions before the construction of its famous madrasahs.
The three monumental madrasahs—Ulughbek, Sherdor, and Tilla-Kori were built between the 15th and 17th centuries, transforming the square into a center of Islamic learning and a masterpiece of architecture.
Under Soviet rule, religious teaching was prohibited, but the complex’s structures were restored to preserve them.
Today, Registan Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Samarkand’s cultural heritage, visited by people from around the world!
