And as a South African from the apartheid area, this is particularly triggering when you think about those who carried the “Dom Pass”.
A dompas (from Afrikaans for
“stupid pass”) was a restrictive internal passport system under South Africa’s apartheid regime, forcing Black Africans to carry identification detailing their identity, work, and movement permissions, essentially making them foreigners in their own country and leading to arbitrary arrests for non-compliance, symbolizing severe oppression and control.
