An open letter signed by over 2,000 citizens from across India, including some of the country’s most respected doctors, public-health experts, veterinarians, scientists, animal-behaviour specialists, environmentalists, and journalists, has raised urgent alarms over India’s proposed mega-shelter model for community dogs.
The signatories warn that mass removal and confinement of dogs could trigger zoonotic disease outbreaks, a resurgence of rabies, increase in dog-bites, ecological destabilisation, and a financial burden running into thousands of crores—with no evidence that the policy will improve public safety.
