Carice van Houten Instagram – Whether it’s the Met Ball, Pink Ball or Oscars, Emmys and Grammys etc it’s incredible how attendees don’t use thier voices in these moments. I think about Vanessa Redgraves extraordinary speech at the Academy Awards in 1978 or how consistently loud Muhammad Ali was! Where are these voices today?! I understand why those who benefit from empire might want to uphold it, but it’s staggering to see the descendants of shattered bloodlines actively participating in this system. How can we be silent about this current colonial project, such as Palestine, Congo, and Sudan, which is actively erasing a people right before our eyes? Once again, it’s young protesters without your cultural influence, reach, and agency who have spoken out. What would our ancestors, whose broken hearts and bones form the foundation of today’s neo-colonial reality, say? What purpose did it serve for you to attend? What will your children say? How will history judge this period? It’s clear to me that apathy has dominion over empathy among the powerful few; thank goodness for the righteous many who refuse to look away.
One thing is for sure, we cannot say we did not know.
We have to be better than this.
We cannot pass each other by like ships in the night whilst we gallop towards oblivion.
