Celebrating today with a little trip down memory lane.
There was a time when I was incredibly passionate about talking about the hijab. I answered questions everywhere I went, and eventually I even wrote and published a book about it.
But over time, I grew tired.
And honestly, drained.
For years I spent a big part of my career answering questions like the one in this video — constantly having to justify my headscarf and my choices.
Eventually I made a decision: I would stop engaging in those conversations.
Because it started to feel like I was only contributing to the idea that my hijab was something up for public debate.
I had hoped that by now this would be a conversation we had moved past.
Unfortunately, it seems like the opposite.
Scrolling through my camera roll and coming across this video reminded me that what we talked about back then is still just as relevant today.
But if there’s one thing the past years have taught me, it’s this:
The more we show up as ourselves — unapologetically — the harder it becomes for the world to pretend we don’t belong.
