Kelly Price Instagram – HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY ✨
On this #InternationalWomensDay, we honor the brilliance, resilience, and truth of Black women everywhere.
In 1966, Nina Simone wrote “Four Women”—a haunting and revolutionary song that named the wounds, strength, and complex identities carried by descendants of slavery in America. Through four archetypes, she told the truth about colorism, survival, rage, dignity, and the power of reclaiming our stories.
Decades later, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! brought that truth to the stage in a powerful tribute—performed by Ledisi, Kelly Price, Jill Scott, and Marsha Ambrosius at the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards on BET.
While the network questioned whether the performance would connect with its core audience, Beverly Bond brought it to the table because she knew it was resonant and necessary. Bond fought to keep it in the show because she understood that our truth would rise through it. And she was right.
The performance became an instantly defining moment that helped set the tone for the exponential growth of the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! platform and movement.
“Four Women” reminds us that the legacy of Black women cannot be reduced to a single narrative. We are daughters of survival and architects of the future. Our stories hold pain, beauty, brilliance, resistance, and joy.
And when we tell them—
when we sing them—
when we rock them—
we heal.
Today and every day, we celebrate the power of Black women reclaiming our narratives, owning our stories, and shining in the fullness of who we are.
Because BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Always.
Happy International Women’s Day. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! is 20 years deep and still ROCKin’!
