Leaving Coco Chanel’s apartment in Paris 🇫🇷
Off to celebrate @stellamccartney who is receiving France’s Légion d’Honneur tonight!
It’s the year of the horse and @stellamccartney gave them all their props. They were majestical in creating a runway experience like I’ve never seen.
My next @oprahsbookclub selection is “Kin” by @tayari Jones. This profoundly eloquent yet familiar novel follows two motherless daughters, Vernice and Annie, who are childhood best friends in Honeysuckle, Louisiana. They grow up together—but as life would have it, they take opposite paths in adulthood, one into polished privilege, the other into a volatile search for belonging, testing what friendship can survive, what mothers leave behind, and how far a woman will go to claim a life of her own. Reading this book felt like being welcomed to a family reunion with people who have become your kin through blood or life experience. It will live within you long after finish reading it. Pick up a copy wherever you get your books, and watch our spoiler-free conversation on my YouTube channel (link in bio) or wherever you get your podcasts.
When I was a junior in high school, we were called to an assembly to listen to Jesse Jackson speak. His speech had a profound effect on me when he said: “Excellence is the best deterrent to racism. Therefore, BE excellent. Excellence is the best deterrent to sexism. Therefore, BE excellent. In all your doing and being, strive for excellence.” I wrote those words down and later turned them into a poster in my bedroom. They became a daily mantra for me. Later, when I became a young reporter, he was my first interview with a “national” figure. He inspired hope that will live on as he rests in peace.
Planks are the most challenging exercise for me. My first one in 2024 lasted 10 seconds. Now I can do them for over a minute, with weights, and whatever creativity Trainer Peter throws my way 💪🏽
I first saw other people doing kettlebell swings so skillfully that I didn’t attempt them for at least a year! Now Trainer Peter is always right by my side to course correct me so I’m doing them right—and I think I finally got the swing of them 💪🏽
I never thought I’d spend my birthday doing a workout let alone a 72-minute one! But as I get older, I am fully aware that it’s a privilege to have a body that can do the treadmill, the bike, the climber, the ski machine, and every machine Trainer Peter throws my way. Thank you all for the birthday wishes—now let me go find a book to read!
Life at 72 is looking different than every other decade. Two summers and two new knees ago, I decided to add strength training to my workouts because we all need to maintain muscle as we get older. I can’t say I’m ready for the Olympics like Adele but I sure feel stronger 💪🏽 So in honor of another trip around the sun for me, go try something new. You never know where it will lead you.

My next @oprahsbookclub pick is “A Guardian and a Thief” by the exquisitely skilled author @megha.maj. Set in near-future Kolkata, India, the novel takes you through a tense one-week race of a desperate mother chasing the thief who stole her family’s precious immigration papers that she needs to join her husband in America. I was spellbound from the very first page and I’m still thinking about it today. Have you ever been fired? If the answer is yes, then this is the episode for you. Friends @laurabrown99 and @kristina_oneill were both successful editor-in-chiefs of separate magazines, when one day they got called in for a meeting and were immediately fired. They soon went through the appropriate emotions and questions: Why am I so embarrassed? Why is it impacting my identity? What do I tell my staff and loved ones? How do I move forward? Laura and Kristina have joined forces to create a roadmap for anyone going through this—or will go through it—with their new book “All the Cool Girls Get Fired” and we’re discussing it all in this week’s @oprahpodcast. It’s available now on my YouTube channel (link in bio) or wherever you podcast!
