Between 2022-2025, Barnes visited an annual debutante ball in Detroit to document the fascinating tradition of Black cotillions, creating the immersive collection of photographs which form this publication.⁠

Through sensitive portraits of debutantes, photographs alongside their elders, and scenes of couples practising their steps, Barnes captures the community, camaraderie, and anticipation of the custom. Meanwhile studies of the cotillion’s distinctive apparel – opulent corsages, taffeta ball gowns, morning suits, tiaras – elaborate its dazzling material world.⁠

The book features a text by Dr. Renita Barge Clark, founder of The Cotillion Society of Detroit Educational Foundation, which recounts the programme’s social and educational impact on its participants.⁠
