Kota Eberhardt Instagram – We stood bemused in the middle of a coffee plantation, surrounded by only banana and sugar cane stalks. I asked the farmer, “so where are all the coffee trees?” He laughed aloud and said, “te enseƱo! (I’ll show you) but how did you think we sugared our coffee? Import?” 200 years in the game making some of the best coffee in the world and the process has stayed virtually the same here in CobĆ”n. There’s an endless array of trees for every need, each with a purpose. Larger older trees shade other ones from direct sunlight, while some produce seeds that are made into seasoning for popular Arabic blends. Others make good firewood used to cook coffee beans or cacao. A cactus on the premises sprouted unprovoked and was allowed to stay only for its medicinal use.
Everything is used, nothing is spared. We approached a thick of mingling banana trees, and I stopped to marvel. “Don’t become too attached,” the farmer shook his head smiling, “Once a banana tree grows it’s fruit, they’re done and they grow seeds beneath themselves to grow another. We call them one hit wonders.”
