Lisa Ray Instagram – #IyengarYoga is blowing my mind.
If I had to recount, my first brush with yoga happened when I moved to London from (ironically) Bombay in 2002. I was restless and easily distracted yet something drew me to sit awkwardly through my first yoga class. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. And I returned the next day.
My first teacher was from the Iyengar tradition. She helped spark a transformation from which I’ve never turned back. Over the years I’ve practised in countless studios, in multiple cities in every school from Jivamukti to Ashtanga to Bikram. I even trained as a Moksha Yoga teacher and opened a studio with partner and fellow Mokshie @parasmoghtader outside Toronto.
And now, taking classes at the wonderful @iychk feels like a home coming. I’ve been craving a more mindful yet rigorous practise steeped in intention and this studio is an oasis in the faddish, extreme yoga landscape of Hong Kong.
I’ve also started re-visiting Patanjali’s Sutras through ‘Core of the Yoga Sutras’ written by BKS himself and generally whooping it up, because flirting with union of body-mind-spirit and the ultimate liberation has that kind of effect on a girl π
yogah citta-vritti-nirodhah means yoga is a mental discipline for restraining the fluctuations of the monkey mind. Will I get there in this life? I don’t know. But the fact I’m not concerned about getting anywhere and completely immersed in life feels the right place to abide. Right here and now.
