Your red blood cell count is so low that you can go into cardiac arrest any moment!’ That's what my doctor said when she 1st saw my blood test report. I’d been experiencing fatigue for months. And a few tests later, another doctor said, ‘You’ve cancer of the plasma of the bone marrow.’ At that moment, for the 1st time in years, I stopped & took a breath. I’d always been on the go. But while a part of me lived on the red carpet, the other craved spiritual peace- extreme ends! Like, I wanted to write a book. It helped me connect with myself. But with work, I never got to do it. But Cancer changed things. My stem cell surgery felt like being close to death & being reborn. But it helped me appreciate the life I had. I remember writing a blog about what it’s like living with cancer. Since the stigma had been so bad in south asian cultures, coming out felt cathartic. People appreciated my honesty too. Somehow, we all found courage in acceptance. After my treatment, I once tried wearing a wig for a public event but I found it to be ridiculous. I told myself, ‘Remove it’ & went all bald. It was all over the headlines but more than that, it was the most liberating thing I’d ever done. But the media wasn’t always nice. After chemo, I was a part of a travel show with my hair short. I called it a ‘chemo cut.’ But the channel replaced me. They wanted a girl with ‘long’ hair. It was heartbreaking. But soon, I did go into remission only to relapse 3 years later. Things were different by then. I was getting married. I was shattered but I took it 1 day at a time. My body told me what to do & I listened. I went for a 3 week transformation program. I meditated, drank juices, ate sprouts, & introspected. I healed internally. And within months I beat cancer again & without the stem cell surgery! It’s been 9 years since then a lot has happened. I did more movies, wrote a book, raised cancer awareness, had kids, & did the unthinkable- found the courage to start an art platform! It’s ironic how a disease that usually brings the end to us changed my life completely & made me feel more alive than anything else ever did!” #NationalCancerAwarenessDay

That was what I was told when I got asked to audition for I CAN'T THINK STRAIGHT in London. Little did I know when I did get the part, was what this film would become to so many. When I read the script, I was pulled in by this incredible tale of love and honesty. And then I met @shamimsarif and @hananfkattan, the ladies that the film was truly about and they became instant family. And then I met the incomparable @lisaraniray … and 'the rest is history.' ❤️🌈 We made this movie before gay marriage was legal, before brown was cool, and way before 'being yourself' was lauded. There was no fancy budget or intimacy coordinators. In fact, one of the investors was as slimy and as corrupt as they come. This piece of garbage not only harassed many of us, he also deliberately didn’t pay our hotel room bill so one night after a long shoot day, we came home to find ourselves locked out and our stuff removed. I even had to sneak out of London in the middle of night to catch a flight back to the US that I booked on my own as this same investor didn’t want me to leave...this same person 'lost' our sound so we had to dub THE WHOLE MOVIE. I could go on and on about the challenges with this film. But what prevailed was our spirit and passion. Many international awards and over 100 million views and countless fan videos later…this film is celebrated as one of the most iconic films featuring LGBTQ+ themes and characters in a way never seen before. 🙏🏽 Before it was hip to do so. Finally I’ve landed on forms of fitness that work best for me - exercise that is challenging but cultivates mindfulness, body awareness and fun. For years I emerged from cave like gyms, blinking in the sunlight, feeling drained and sore instead of what I feel now: energized. Thanks again @thepaddxb for bringing the joy of Pilates to my days. Yoga - Pilates - Tennis. Eat clean 80 percent of the time, clean up your relationships, spend time in silence, sit with your shadow side, notice the buds of beauty in the everyday…and don’t forget the sunscreen. With that, I reckon I’m good for the next 50 years.

Lisa Ray Instagram - Dude, I’m old. This is (almost) 50. I am needless to say filled with gratitude. (ITS NOT MY BIRTHDAY) When I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2009 the prognosis was dire. The living since then has been layered with lessons on how to let go of toxic thoughts and behaviour and edging closer to my authentic self (hint: masti and madness) Knowing myself does not mean I am not a mystery even though being mysterious is no longer socially acceptable. Rather now I can leave a party mid-way in favour of an animated film and cuddle on the couch. Chase those ‘shoulds’ out of my head with a chair. (Try it, no one needs that shit) Nosy queries remain unanswered. This does not mean I won’t engage, but meet me next to the waterfall, where we can’t hear each other. Really, talking is over rated. Does knowing the carbon footprint of a banana compel me to throw it in the garbage? I have travelled excessively, in unmeasured ways, not knowing if I would land up on a mountaintop or in a souk. Even awareness is over rated. Why am I here? Why did I make it and not the other? Here I’ll answer out of sheer weariness. Maybe we will find what eludes us not by asking but by listening. Lisa Ray Instagram - Before Sufi and Soleil were born- before I knew I would be the mother of twin girls - I cherished this notion of promoting equality through gender neutral clothes. What are gender neutral clothes? Clothes that cater to both male and female and do not restrict on the basis of sex. This approach basically nullifies this idea that dresses are for girls and football jerseys for boys. The whole pink vs blue nursery thing. After the girls came along, and after conscientiously amassing a wardrobe in shades of tasteful beige and camel for them, an interesting thing has happened. My girls - who are confident, assertive wells of curiosity- have been expressing (loudly) their preference for Princess dresses. And so I had to shift my feminist agenda. Why can’t Sufi and Soleil be fierce and independent minded AND enjoy frilly, extravagant design? Why not indeed. One need not cancel out the other. Perhaps in another few months they will express a fascination for high tops and drop crotch joggers. Who knows. But yet again, these two have challenged me and demanded a re ordering of my universe. It’s just clothes, after all. So for now we are enjoying our tryst with tulle and lace and sparkle and the cutest silhouettes like this one by @fairiesnmermaids 💝 I’m once again humbled by 2, two and half year olds. Nothing like kids to slay your everyday beliefs. #feministmomwoes
