Dashami is always bittersweet. Ma Durga returns to her celestial home, and we, her children, are left carrying her light within us until she returns again. This year, as a proud Bengali, I felt deeply grateful to be immersed in the traditions of Pujo Bari at my friend’s home. It lit me from within—a shared feminine devotion, a circle of Shakti reminding me that when Ma arrives, she never truly leaves. Her resonance lingers, her blessings stay. One of the most moving rituals for me was Darpan Visarjan. Before Ma’s idol is immersed, a vessel of water or mirror is placed before her. In it, we glimpse her reflection one final time—her divine essence shimmering back at us. This sacred act symbolizes her prana, her life force, departing from the idol. It is grace and grief entwined—reminding us that while form dissolves, spirit is eternal. Then comes Debi’r Boron, when we circle the goddess four times—each round echoing a truth of human existence: 🔴 The first circle: birth 🔴 The second: life 🔴 The third: death 🔴 The fourth: rebirth A complete cycle, reminding us that endings are never truly endings—only thresholds. Finally, we offer sweets, sindoor, and prayers, gently touching her face as if to wipe away her tears before farewell. And then the joyous Sindoor Khela, where vermilion becomes play, love, and inclusivity. Because Ma is the mother of all—beyond gender, beyond status, beyond boundaries—every heart has the right to bid her farewell in devotion and joy. This Dashami, I carry her fire, her compassion, and her infinite strength in my bones.
