Healed and learned to cherish and prioritise health, spiritual growth and happiness above everything (because this process is lifelong) Worked on a hit OTT show, playing a super fun, unconventional character at 49, that suddenly made me hot with Gen Z 😂 (only after the producer-friend pinned me down with the promise of a female led set) Learned tennis at 42 (because, why not?) This after getting diagnosed with cancer at 37. (Blessings come in many disguises) ….. This particular chapter comes post a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma – a blood cancer – and a thriving career in front of the camera that while it afforded a level of fame and independence, nearly killed me. I happily leave the fame game to those more constitutionally suited. The business of entertainment is not aligned with my values and inner life. But it has given me a platform to say: Society’s rules? WHAT RULES? If it has never occurred to live on your own terms, WHY NOT? #staycurious #stayhumble #beginnersmind Thanks @by.ushma devi and @makeupbymaitreyi for braving the sandstorm today to capture some moments in the Ray-Dehni mad, chaotic household. (Yes, we are that family that does the annual white shirt group photos 😂) I notice I’ve become terribly impatient and dare I say, awkward, in front of the camera lately, like a spell has broken. Perhaps on a deeper level this self-consciousness with being photographed marks the transition between swimming in the river and clambering out onto the sandy bank to watch the current stream by. I’M OVER IT. The desire to be seen a particular way, to play with artifice and disappear into a different character that photography afforded me my entire career has faded. But then I never truly prioritised grabbing eyeballs. Anyhow, today I’d rather watch my family being captured by the skillful eye of @by.ushma who specialises in natural, authentic images which is what draws me to her as a photographer and friend. Waiting – such an exquisite practise in a world of instant gratification – now for the results. Best friends/sisters are the relationships that lay a foundation of care and love, the space where monuments of memories are built that nourish our emotional well being and support us through the tough times. My Golden sister @sujstyle turns 50. I am blessed to know her since our tumultuous teens, to watch her blossom and continuously reinvigorate her understanding of the world, to see how her passions, her kindness and intellect ignite others both professionally and personally. Some people go their whole lives not understanding what genuine, deep friendship is. Or that sisterhood requires three things to burn bright- heart, honesty, commitment. Okay and humour helps. Thank you @sujstyle for teaching all three (plus big laughs) Here’s to celebrating the Purple Queen – my favourite travel companion- at 50 and cheers to making friends with the twin pulls exerted by this decade: joyous release and (sigh) gravity 😘 thank you for being there for every milestone and taking my quirks and eccentricities in your stride. We’ve laughed and cried and despaired and celebrated and even landed up in the same city thanks to kismet. I love you. To truly know you is to love you Sutasha 😉 Stay fabulous. Happy Birthday Suj! It’s a question that I have been asking myself as this is my 50th year. I chat to my soul sister @lisaraniray on the importance of celebrating yourself in the way you want, with the people you want to be with. She spent more than 30 years in a wooden hut in the Białowieża Forest, without electricity or access to running water. A lynx slept in her bed, and a tamed boar lived under the same roof with her. She was a scientist, ecologist, and the author of award-winning films, as well as radio broadcasts. She was also an activist who fought for the protection of Europe’s oldest forest. Simona believed that one ought to live simply, and close to nature. Among animals, she found that which she never found with humans. Photo Lech Wilczek. Thank you @penguinindia for this volume of extemporaneous talks given in Ranakpur, Rajasthan by Osho/Rajneesh/Bhagwan – the great mystic master who defies categorisation. Decades now, I’ve been reading his works, listening to his talks and practising the meditations and techniques he offered in the service of inner transformation towards an awakened state of being, sometimes called Zorba the Buddha. His words remain even more relevant today in a world of fractured attention that still yearns beneath it all for answers and wholeness. I’ve written in my book #ClosetotheBone how my time in his ashram was deeply transformative. There’s a lot of misunderstanding of who he was and what he taught. For instance the documentary ‘Wild Wild Country’ never explores Osho’s invitation to step into greater awareness- or the techniques he taught to achieve direct realisation but rather focuses on the very human and organisational drama around him. He was never saintly and advised against it- from what I understand the master would have been deeply amused at the lingering controversy he still evokes. Personally, I don’t pay attention to the drama and stories. I prefer to immerse myself in the words of this charismatic rule breaker, full of wisdom, humour and nuggets of insight that continue to be fresh and relevant to the human condition today. Writing is such a solitary and occasionally dispiriting pursuit that the sheer gumption to finish a book- never mind plough through multiple drafts – and then get published is in itself a singular achievement. When talented and wonderful souls win – I feel we all drink from the well of optimism and goodness. Well done @bysarahamdan 🎈 #Repost @elfdubai with @use.repost ・・・ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬! 🎉✨ Our First Chapter fellow Sara Hamdan has achieved a regional first in publishing: her debut novel, 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬?, got snapped up in a major 𝐭𝐰𝐨-𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 with US publisher Holt following a highly competitive auction. Sara is a Netflix short story award winner, former New York Times journalist and ex-editor at Google. The novel is the heart-warming story of a young woman’s career aspirations to become a stand-up comedian in New York City as she balances the traditions of her Palestinian upbringing with the need to live life – and to love – on her own terms. It has been pitched as The Marvellous Mrs Maisel meets Crazy Rich Asians. It is scheduled for publication in early 2025. حققت الكاتبة سارة حمدان المقيمة في دبي إنجازاً إقليمياً في مجال النشر، إذ حصلت روايتها الأولى، “ماذا سيقول الناس؟” (What Will People Think?) @utapublishing #Repost @theupsidespace with @use.repost ・・・ P. Trained as a mechanical engineer, he turned to sculptural art after migrating from Tamil Nadu, India to Singapore. He is the co-founder of Gnani Arts–a well-known art gallery based in the country. Gnana’s works repeatedly explore the concept of attachment, while his figures, especially the bovine, point to nostalgic memories of growing up in an agricultural environment. Gnana’s recent explorations of Singapore’s cityscape speak of how he perceives his place of migration, and the transition of this bustling city from transient residence to home. ‘Home Sweet Home-3’, by Gnana is part of a series titled ‘Urban Unanimous’ where the artist shifts his focus from his cultural roots to his immediate surroundings–portraying the bustling cityscape of Singapore. ‘Home Sweet Home-3’ is part of our latest exhibition ‘Chimera of Proximity’ curated by Nalina Gopal (@specialistsatantati) and is now up for sale at @theupsidespace!
