Suleman Faisal (@sulemanfaisal_ ) is a visual artist and educator currently based in Lahore, Pakistan. He works in various mediums, such as sculptures, videos, and performances.
Suleman’s multidisciplinary artworks investigate the latent aggression present within humans and objects, and the minor acts of violence carried out through socially-acceptable activities such as cooking, hosting, or manufacturing.
In Rhythm I, Faisal depicts how the traditional practice of cooking has an inherent aggressive element to it as it involves killing an animal or plucking live vegetation from the earth.
As a pacifist who enjoys cooking and sharing meals, acts of violence like chopping, slicing, etc, are an antithesis of the joy of sharing. Thus the artist is confronted with a paradox.
Rhythm I is up for sale on @theupsidespace as part of the exhibition, Before Meets After, curated by Ambereen Karamat.
