But Christ
What kind of Christianity
Is that
How does the love of the Lord
George
Reckon with those scars
On their backs
It doesn’t
This country is a riddle
Played on the fiddle
Of contradictions
And the best of intentions
And that hell
Has been our democracy
Ever since
America’s contravention

A company of white folk
Dragged a mountain of black folk
Across miles of green ocean
To the land of opportunity
The American dream
Free labor
Funny how many
Different kinds of
Free
There can be
There’s free
Free for all
Free for some
Free for none
You brought us here
And we become
Your mess
The mess
You keep trying’ to rid yourself of
Just like George
He was free

The human beings
He owned
And did he
Eventually
He waited
Till he was dead
Free from this world
So Martha could be free
To live the remainder of her life
