My father’s job was to integrate the U.S. Army overseas. He died trying to expose and help heal the hypocrisy of our nation. I #TakeAKnee for him and this country.
“Why are we having all these people from #shithole countries come here?” . Because They recall our ancestors Slaves and immigrants alike Because they could be America’s Newest and brightest lights Standing together with their American brothers and sisters Black brown yellow and white Because there are no people on this earth Too poor Too beat down Too uneducated Too incapable of helping to fulfill Their worth Because America is the land of huddled masses Because that’s how deep How real How moral How humane Is democracy’s girth Because we are the land of opportunity Because we continue to struggle For racial peace And human propriety “The wretched refuse of your teeming shore Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me” Cry the patina-d lips of Lady Liberty Because unlike their countries These people have talent and goals Because these people Have beating hearts and hungry souls Because Though their countries may be These people Are not shit-holes
My sista #KerryWashington My sometimes daughter Glistened At the #GLSEN Awards She spoke luminescently Of the youth who GLESN UP And asked their parents to listen up When our children speak up Insisting we the parents remain teachable Reachable She shone a light Out past the eerie communal nightmare That is our overwhelmingly divisive White House And basked in the light of hope Cast by youth Who must be our truth GLSEN UP A movement of action-takers and change-makers Who aspire to douse the flames of exclusion Who understand that their leadership Through the robustness of their might Can right Our capricious socio-political ship I congratulate her for her words And for the respect she more than deserves I raise a glass to that respect And to my sista GLESN UP y’all GLESN UP . #RESPECT

The two monsters in my life; I love them both #Scandal
Smiling on the inside while talking with #TavisSmiley on the @TavisSmileyShow about the legendary comedian/activist @TheRealDickGregory and the play #TurnMeLoose about #DickGregory at @TheWallisBH #TheWallis. Airs tonight on @PBS, or watch online at PBS.org 24hours after broadcast.
Last night one of my heroes, my “new best friend,” Dick Gregory, was taken by the universal force. We’d only met a handful of times, yet his passing feels like the loss of a close family member. Having his blessing to do his comedy, and tell his story, I was given entrée into the power of his mind and spirit. He loved my portrayal of him and I loved that he made me feel like I was being taken under wing. His death, unsurprisingly, enlivens in me a greater need to tell his story as a beacon, a guiding light, against the darkness emerging from America’s profoundly racist and economic schisms. . Born Robert Claxton Gregory in 1932, by 1961 Dick Gregory garnered enough fame to earn him the key to his home city, St. Louis; yet, he was denied a room at a leading hotel. “They gave me the key to the city, and then changed all the locks,” he quipped, the perfect metaphor for what Dick was up against as a comedian and a leader of The Civil Rights Movement. Through his activism and humor, Dick spent most of his life opening as many doors as possible. His prescience, wit, and wisdom will be missed, but the lessons of his labors, the insights of this “colored funny man,” will endure. . He is now at rest, while we continue to #staywoke Thank you #dickgregory

If hiding the truth Conspicuously Behind your back In full view Of the citizenry Is what The Donald considers Transparency Then this White House Emperor needs new clothes ‘Cause it’s obvious and apparent That his transparency Is a veil of lies – Our leader is a wall of sighs “Why” he cries “I’m innocent” He grits his teeth and tweets “Except for Abe No President’s been made Greater than me I’m a gold plated billion dollar American idol Give me your love Give me your praise And pray From The Make America Great Again bible” – Trump is a man Who suits himself Whose morals never take a bath Who loves insulting With harsh and clever tags Who blusters and brags Disgorging rings of filth All ‘round those ancient Oval walls Festering rings of apprehension ‘Round those prestigious congressional halls – Where does that leave us Where do we go It’s up to us The people To bellow “Mr. President This ain’t no show There are people who are dyin’ Cryin’ Fallin’ from hope Stop playin’ footsies with Putin Dodgin’ and weavin’ What are you doin’ It’s dangerous Take the yoke Hang it ‘round your neck Put your back into it All hands on deck Do your job Help pursue the country’s happiness Not your own sense of glory-ness Maintain a sense of equanimity Not some overwhelming Narcissistic Need For visibility Make America great Sure But keep America safe Do your job Cut the bullshit And cast the showmanship Aside Before you’ve injured the country Degraded the office And destroyed the people’s pride” – #MakeAmericaProudAgain

So What Do We Do About George . American democracy Born of dichotomy Take George Washington I mean He owned 276 slaves 276 black folk Who worked For George For free While George was out there Fighting to be What they wanted to be . George gave those 276 Christ Mighty white of him Mighty nice of him But Christ What kind of Christianity Is that How does the love of the Lord George Reckon with those scars On their backs It doesn’t This country is a riddle Played on the fiddle Of contradictions And the best of intentions And that hell Has been our democracy Ever since America’s contravention . A company of white folk Dragged a mountain of black folk Across miles of green ocean To the land of opportunity The American dream Free labor Funny how many Different kinds of Free There can be There’s free Free for all Free for some Free for none You brought us here And we become Your mess The mess You keep trying’ to rid yourself of Just like George He was free To free The human beings He owned And did he Eventually He waited Till he was dead Free from this world So Martha could be free To live the remainder of her life Free Of financial eventualities . He fought to be free Why couldn’t he see That he Was as tyrannical As that tyrant He never wanted To be So what do we do about George Do we pull him down from his great height Well maybe just a mite He made history He made it possible To be Born in a country Where ti’s possible To be free . #washingtonmonument
In a digital world, #WorldBookDay reminds us that one of the oldest technologies in the world is books. One of my favorites is #InvisibleMan by #RalphEllison. Read it, or I can read it you. #RequiredReading #YouAreWhatYouRead
