Dr. Susan Hockfield was servicing her calling as an impactful neuroscientist, as she pioneered research that led to the discovery of a gene that plays a critical role in the spread of cancer in the brain and linking how childhood trauma affected brain structure and function when she was asked to become the dean and then provost at #Yale. She calls this phase her ‘Call to Service.’ She then became president of #MIT- the first life scientist and first woman to lead the venerable institution. She lead MIT for 8 years, where she had a direct view into the remarkable innovations and research that is building our future. She captured her view of the future in a new book, ‘The Age of Living Machines’ where she explores the promise of the convergence of biology and engineering.
In this conversation, we discussed batteries powered by viruses, Nano particles that can detect cancer with a urine test, using water channels found in cells to filter water, and other amazing new technologies that leverage nature’s genius. The book is readable and hopeful that we can solve some of the greatest challenges we face with a growing global population. She also illustrates the critical role of research in our economy, and policies we should consider to preserve our leadership going forward.
