Lisa Ray Instagram – This review is from a very talented writer. I bow before her words. I met Amu recently feeling the hand of serendipity bringing us together.

Repost from @amutedstory using @RepostRegramApp – I don’t usually read non-fiction and having read and been disappointed by several “celebrity” memoirs picked at random from airport bookstores, the genre is something I have been careful to avoid overall.
.
But Lisa Ray’s ‘Closer to the Bone’ sets itself apart, standing tall and golden like wheat from the chaff. The story of how I came to the book is interesting: I happened upon an interview of hers on @filmcompanion. Before I could roll my eyes at another celebrity author, I was struck by Lisa’s depth of thinking and ease of articulation. I ended up listening to her rapt to the finish, and ordered the book immediately after. As someone who has been struggling with the after-effects of trauma and depression, stories of healing had a particular draw.
.
The prologue, written in the self-assured and unique voice of the author, combines surprising depth and humour, setting the tone for the rest of the book. Even though I was not particularly interested in the celebrity gossip or the story of her glamorous beginnings, it was this voice of reflection that carried me through. This is a true memoir, with a singular voice reflecting on the changing self, becoming and coming undone, making and remaking itself through the vagaries of life. The writing is direct yet elegant, with beautiful turns of phrase leaping out from the page even in the more pedestrian parts. I can’t wait for this warm, assured writing voice to turn its lens onto other subjects.
.
Reading about somebody’s life can feel voyeuristic, but it is in the quiet searching, the wrestling with life’s biggest questions, the reflection on our closest relationships that I found my own self reflected. The addition of a moving epilogue penned by her partner was a fitting end to the book. Underneath it all #closetothebone seems to say that we are all the same, falling and rising but interconnected in ways we cannot comprehend. If you’re looking for inspiration without any pretensions and an easy yet deeply humanist read…
