We did not wake up at 4 am to listen to the recital of Mahisasura Mardini by Birendra Krishna Bhadra on Mahalaya, but sat together that afternoon in Singapore, Sufi and Soleil taking turns to listen and then wrestle at our feet. Baba patiently explained the Durga mythology from both a colloquial and Vedic perspective. Then, Goddess Durga and her children having began their ascent from Kailasha to the lowlands, Baba leaned back, closed his eyes and felt the reverberation of the conch, signalling our soulful solidarity with all that is. Never will you meet a man with a more harmonious play between Shakti and Shiva – the divine feminine and masculine energies – of Chaitanya, Bhakti and Seva, than my baba, Salil Kumar Ray.
