In the original trilogy, the non-matching leg, which is not actually very noticeable, was George’s subtle hint that Threepio had an accident-prone history. JJ had a similar thought in TFA. @tobbyleking asks why Threepio’s name was sometimes 6-PO. This was only in the French language version, and only in the first trilogy. It was thought that Z-6PO worked better when dubbed. Here’s how my French friend Roland explains it: « Le nom Z-6PO avait été choisi pour les 3 épisodes en version française sortis initialement pour que cela aille mieux avec la prononciation labiale des acteurs. Par la suite, pour les épisodes suivants et pour les épisodes initiaux remastérisés, les traducteurs sont revenus à C-3PO. » This classic photo is one of my favourites. The first foreign language edition of my book will be published on the 17th of April. It’s in FRENCH! (The Ewok version is taking slightly longer. As for the Huttese translation – don’t even ask.) Anyway, in French, it’s “Je suis C-3PO – Les souvenirs ne s’effacent pas”. Threepio approves because it’s a data thing. He’s extremely chuffed to have gained another form of communication and I’m happy that I can still communicate with my wonderful European friends.
