Lisa Ray Instagram – Repost from @cinephileart using @RepostRegramApp – WATER [2005] – ‘Water’ is the third film of Deepa Mehta’s famous elemental trilogy, followed by Earth and fire. While her previous two features dealt topics like homosexuality and religious altercation, WATER associates with child marriage and mistreatment of widows in Indian society. Set in 1930, the film recounts the story of eight years old child bride chuyia who’s forced to live in an ashram as per Hindu tradition after her husband’s sudden death. There she meets a beautiful young widow Kalyani (Lisa Ray), mother like figure Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) and befriends with Narayan(John Abraham), a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Through Chuyia Narayan falls in love with Kalyani , who also yearns for a lover who will respect her. The film perfectly depicts the inhumane treatment of widows, which is still a burning problem in present india. It faced major backlash during production as extremists raised objections to the film’s criticism of Hindu society, when it only took up controversial issues like ostracism and misogyny.
° My rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of five.
