But it was Nietzsche who breathed poetry back into it, reinvented it into one of his most beautiful ideas. “Let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. Some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.” * * * At our deepest level, we know that things really could not have been otherwise, because everything we are and have done is bound inextricably in a web of consequences since our birth. We all wish we could cherry-pick the good things in our lives and discard the rest, knowing that it is one of the crueler lies we tell ourselves. Most of the time, we react violently against negative events, unwilling to accept their role (and potential promise) in our lives. We feel helpless to love and embrace the flow of events because so much of them—natural disasters, illness and death, accidents, pandemics—are out of our control, making us feel like we’ve lost our grip on any sense of meaning or purpose that used to steer our lives. Saying YES to the WHOLE of life, in all its uncertainty, failings, and occasional moments of ecstatic beauty—that is Amor Fati. Photo: @pauldavidesposti #amorfati #nietzsche #thestoics #yes
