Earlier this month, around 5:30 a.m., an elderly man saw a woman jump from a pedestrian bridge over the Kenagakawa River in Tokyo. The woman, apparently in her 30s, climbed over the railing and threw herself in an attempt to commit suicide.
“Don’t die!” the man yelled while calling the paramedics. It turns out, however, the closest building to that bridge is the Sakaigawa Stable – a training facility for professional sumo wrestlers. As soon as they heard the screams, about twenty very large men rushed into the river to save the drowning woman.
They brought her to the river bank but were soon faced with another problem. When the paramedics arrived and put the woman on a stretcher, the stretcher needed to be lifted to a height of about 2 meters to carry it to the road.
It was an easy task for the sumo wrestlers who helped lift the stretcher up and into the waiting ambulance. The woman didn’t have any serious injuries, doctors later commented.
