This is an urgent and delicate moment in our lives. Politics and elections always seem like this far away thing that one person doesn’t have the power to change. But what’s happening in our country right now has made it beyond clear how personal politics are. I know I am anxious and frustrated. I would go so far as to say terrified. But I have discovered that when I get informed and participate the fear gets smaller. Voting is a part of that. I vote because if we want to change laws, we need to change lawmakers; from the Mayor who hires the Police Chief, to City Councils that allocate how our tax dollars are spent to improve (or not improve) our communities. I vote as an act of solidarity with the BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ communities. Which makes me think of a Lilla Watson quote I recently heard from @mspackyetti: “If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come here because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” Voting is one of the ways we can work together. It isn’t our only tool, but it’s one of the most important ways we can participate in dismantling the white/man-made inequity that was built into the fabric of this country. Black women do this work everyday. We have always been at the center of economic, social and cultural change in this country. Our leadership is often utilized without being centered. When we stand together to work towards achieving equity and power in this country, when we support other Black women who are working to create progressive change in this country, we all win! Everyone wins! Who are the Black women in your world making a difference? Who are the Black women in your world who could make a difference? Tag them, share this post, and let’s start this important dialogue as we walk towards November and voting for the change we want to see. The time to build our political power is now! #shewinswewin #VOTE 💪🏾 #Repost @rashidajones ・・・ #Repost @traceeellisross ・・・ We are in unprecedented times. As you may know, there is a primary election coming up in Kentucky this Tuesday, June 23. What’s happening in Kentucky is a perfect storm of America’s most pressing issues. Breonna Taylor was murdered in Louisville and still, there has been no justice. Voter suppression is real; Jefferson County has ONE polling place for 600,000 people. Mitch McConnell’s got to go and in his place we have the chance to elect a senator, Charles Booker @booker4ky , someone who represents our values in this moment, whose work politically and on the ground, is in alignment with the change we want to see. #alleyesonkentucky TIMELY …ALL EYES ON KENTUCKY!
