Best moment ever. I thought it was a @jvn mirage. We just stared at each other until we both said at the same time: Is that you??? Despite the urge to run toward each other in slow motion, we socially distanced hugged and it was the best. Now I’ve got a great story about how I finally met JVN AND it’s family Hamilton night. Damn. My dear friend @elizabeth_gilbert_writer sees me. Her journal pages may need to come with warning labels. I had the same gut-punch-bear-hug feeling when my therapist told me that I needed to work on my “Let go and let Brené” approach to life. “Ouch and thank you” at the exact same time. ❤️ Sharing my thoughts on love, and why unfollows and comments like, “Shut up and stick to your research” won’t keep me from pressing on with purpose. Less armor. More learning. History and hope. History and hope. You can’t spell wholehearted without A-R-T. Thank you @andreapippins and @avalonmckenzie for using your talent and creativity to help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of the #TheGiftsofImperfection by bringing the 10 guideposts to life. @andreapippins gave us this gorgeous flower and a version YOU color or paint (Image 1 and 2). @avalonmckenzie gave us two amazing versions (Swipe for Image 3 and 4). It’s a love-tap-ass-kicker about scrappiness, comparison, and resource-gathering. Link in profile to listen. A hero who brought us heroes. Chadwick Boseman . 🙏🏻 Like many of you, I’m feeling weary this week. Some days I feel on top of my anxiety and some days it crashes over me. Some days I jump out of bed and think, “I got this! It’s going to be OK.” Other days I just want to hide under the covers until the world gets easier and I have a pandemic end-date, a back to school plan that keeps students, teachers and staff safe, and a signed universal commitment to social justice. I finished reading The Gifts audio book this afternoon. It’s the first time I’ve read it aloud, and when I came across this amazing quote – reading it made me feel better. When I first discovered this quote, I thought about the not-so-pretty details from my pre-sober, pre-breakdown-spiritual-awakening life. I thought about all of the proving, perfecting, and pleasing. I never thought about how to apply this learning to the “here and now.” Today, this quote shook me by the shoulders in a different way. Not only is it impossible for me to go back and make the old details pretty, I can’t make the new details pretty today. Uncertainty and anxiety drive me to hyper-focus on the details, but all that does is ramp up my fear and exhaustion. I think I’m going to try to move forward – in the wobbliest of ways – and refocus on the beautiful whole: Love, rest, justice, walking, water, connection, self-care, sleep, and joy. Stay awkward, brave and kind, BB Always straddling the tension and trying not to tap out. Forever convincing ourselves that we can hold so many contradictory pieces and feelings. Not only are tension and contradictory pieces OK and normal — they’re the magic sauce. Carl Jung called the paradox one of our most valued spiritual possessions and a great witness to the truth. He wrote, “Only the paradox comes anywhere near to comprehending the fullness of life.” Sometimes beautiful. Sometimes terrible. Always deeply human. ❤️ One of my favorite things about this book is that so many of us are traveling this dimly-lit-bumpy-ass road together. Tag a friend whose courage has made you braver. Awkward, brave, and kind, friends! It’s been 150 days since Breonna Taylor was murdered in her home by Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove — and her killers have not been charged. Too often Black women who die from police violence are forgotten. Let’s stay loud, keep demanding justice for Breonna and her family, and SAY HER NAME. I am proud to stand with WNBA players in joining this campaign, created by @phenomenal in partnership with the Breonna Taylor Foundation. Art by @arlyn.garcia We launched Season 1 with a conversation about FFTs — effing first times. We’re launching Season 2 with a conversation about Day 2 — it’s one of my favorite subjects (and least favorite challenges). Day 2 sounds easy enough, but the middle is NO JOKE. It’s the messy middle — the point of no return. Join us as we talk about navigating what’s next and why it’s always best to stumble through uncertainty together. Listen at the link in profile. PS: Thanks to our kick-ass team, transcripts for all past episodes are now available on the episode pages on brenebrown.com! We’ll make these available 5-7 business days after each show airs. ❤️ Can you believe “The Gifts of Imperfection” was published 10 years ago? The research turned my life upside down and the book gave birth to our wonderful, wild, and truly wholehearted community. I’m grateful for both. We’re celebrating with a new hardcover edition and more. You can read about the celebration plans on the blog. Today we unpack tools for raising shame resilient children and some of my favorite TV series and films that do an amazing job capturing human emotion and experience. SPOILER: “I May Destroy You” by Michaela Coel and “Normal People” by Sally Rooney are on my list! Link in profile to listen to the full episode. From FFTs to AMAs, we have had the best time on #UnlockingUs — and by the best, we mean the hardest and the most insightful 17 weeks we could imagine — especially as we face the COVID pandemic and join forces to fight for racial justice. It’s an honor to talk through and unlock some of what’s happening in the world with you and our guests. Thank you! We are taking a summer hiatus for the next few weeks, but we’ll be back with more unlocking soon! As we start to plan the next season, who would you like to hear from? What would you like to talk about? Stay awkward, brave and kind! ❤️👊🏻❤️ The Gifts of Imperfection anniversary hardback edition and the new audiobook are out today! Yes, I’m reading the audiobook. Imperfectly, of course. 10 years later and The Gifts is still a no bullshit zone! But I thought I’d show you how tempting it can be. Two big learnings over the past decade: 1. Practicing the 10 guideposts is way harder than I thought. 2. Practicing the 10 guideposts is way more important than I imagined. Celebrating with art prints, downloads, an assessment, and a webinar. We know the drill. We know when to stay (wind) and when to go (surge). For those on the coast (they’re saying up to 30 miles inland) time to go! Be safe. Love and help each other. ❤️ Take important papers and share emergency contacts. Dear Marco and Laura: Per my daughter – READ THE ROOM. What an honor! Got to talk to one of my favorite people – Alan Alda. Grateful for his humor, empathy, and commitment to helping and supporting scientists. You can listen at the link in profile or wherever you listen to your podcasts. I said, “Ask Me Anything,” and the #UnlockingUs community came through with the tough questions. To be honest, I thought I’d get some easy, fun ones—but no, all deep-end questions. In fact, we had hundreds and hundreds of tough, smart, thoughtful questions submitted, and in today’s episode I answer five of them. We cover ‘fake news,’ disappointment vs self-pity, religion and shame, when something is shame-worthy, and we’re just getting started. Listen to the episode at the link in my profile. It took us several years to develop and validate an assessment that measures where you are in relation to the 10 guideposts in “The Gifts of Imperfection.” What are your strengths? Where are your opportunities for growth? This week, we debuted the free Wholehearted Inventory to celebrate the launch of the 10th Anniversary hardback edition. You can take the assessment at the Link in Profile.
