Every birthday, I find myself with a lump in my throat, lost in my Nani’s memory yet left with a helpless heap of gratitude for the love I have in my life in the form of the incredible people that surround me.
As I’m growing up, I understand a little bit better of what my Nani lived and swore by that I see in my mother every single day that leaves me in endless awe of these beautiful women- ultimately, love & compassion for our people is ALL that matters in this very short life we all have, that cannot be taken for granted.
Not the achievements. Not the accolades. Not the milestones. Just the love.
Nani was a woman with the largest heart – selfless, generous and empathetic, with only love to give, with no ulterior motive. It was her greatest strength and weakness. Yet she got not just that love, but so much more in return.

It’s an odd thing to be envious of your own past. But here I find myself, doing just that. It all becomes, a memory. That you pray lasts forever.
Sandwiched between these two absolute gentlemen – amidst the crisp morning sunshine of a cold Parisian day, the faint smell of coffee being freshly brewed, the joy of creating art together; and conversations that spanned across philosophy, literature, cinema, cricket, success and failure and life, at large.

Let me just tell you what this moment is.
August 2018 : This was my last evening in Jamshedpur, after 2 months of filming in this city. We shot outside Sacred Heart a lot, and the students would spend time with us when school ended, while we were shooting on the streets outside, or they’d wave out to us & wish us luck for the day while going in to school. We’d chat with them about many things under the sun. When they heard the Dil Bechara crew is leaving, they told their principal “We want to tell Kizie something.” When the team told me the girls at Sacred Heart want to meet you before you leave – I took time between scenes, to quickly go and say goodbye to them, thinking a few of us might meet in a classroom and chat about everything that happened in the last 2 months. But they had different plans. They requested to have a study period cancelled, so they could collect all through their corridors, in thousands, wave out to me from up above, and echo in their loudest voices together – “We love you”. They told me they saw themselves in me, and watching me inspired them in ways big & small. This meant the whole world to me. This visual, for the last 2 years, through thick and thin, has brought joyous tears to my eyes. It’s why I have always said that being around students makes me feel alive, it’s why I’ve dedicated a large part of the last 7 years of my life towards educational upliftment initiatives with various NGO partners. Their energy is limitless, and the boundaries of how much love they have to give, simply don’t exist. Thank you, you beautiful beautiful girls of Sacred Heart. I’ve told you how much I love you many times before. I hope watching Dil Bechara made you as happy and proud as having us in your city creating it did.

I know we’re slowly restarting and trying to get back to being out and about.
But the pandemic really isn’t close to being over just yet. We’ve got to be just as safe as we have been all these months of lockdown, as we step into our regular lives.

One of the greatest blessings of my life has been the teachers & professors I have had the fortune of crossing paths with while growing up.
Whether in academia, or the performing arts. Each of them, are unique, and so phenomenal, that they continue to be in my life to this day. We celebrate our joys together. And pick each other up when the tide gets rough.
Except today? We’re friends. We discuss everything from the state of education in India to trivial things like how to get our brownie batter just right.
It is them, who inspired me to dedicate a large part of my life to educational upliftment for our country.
I became a teacher volunteer at an NGO in Delhi that I now call home 6.5 years ago, and that was just the starting point of discovering a passion that excited me as much as acting does – being around students, teaching them, but learning so much more from them in return. 6.5 years, many NGO partnerships, city & country tours, and university visits later – my admiration for both teachers and students only stands exponentially heightened. It’s the most special bond in the world. To every teacher out there, thank you, for dedicating your life so selflessly to the greatest cause of education, in any sphere. To every student out there, I’m sorry the pandemic messed up your best laid out plans and kept you out of your educational space for so many months. It’s all going be alright, I promise. We’ll make it alright. ❤️

My Dearest Kizie Basu, Just as you wrote to Abhimanyuveer, here I am, writing to you, after being, becoming and creating you.
You’ve caused me emotional turmoil, you’ve caused me mental and physical exhaustion, and nights spent wide awake lost in your thoughts – but you’ve given me so much more in return. Your pain, your despair, your selflessness, your love – is far deeper and greater than you should ever have experienced at your age, and that’s why you Kizie, are far greater and beyond your years.
You have taught me strength, you have taught me patience, resilience, and you have taught me to never ever lose hope.
You have taught me that just because people may not understand you, and the depth of your emotion, does not mean you should ever stop feeling them.
You taught me that the death of someone you love can never mean the death of that love.
You’re so beautifully broken Kizie Basu, if only you knew that a world full of millions now love you. But you’ve always been oblivious to how beautiful and special you are, and that’s what makes you, so imperfectly perfect. Your best kept secrets are now out for the world to know – your obsession with AV, your dislike for Sandesh, your fear of death, your being fractured from within but trying your best to appear woven together and complete from the outside, but most importantly – your limitless, unconditional, undying, and passionate love for Immanuel Rajkumar Junior.
Your’s and Manny’s mystical timeless love is the least you both deserve. It first took months of relentless work and preparation to become you, and now letting you go has been simply impossible.
You have both wounded, and healed me Kizie Basu – but you have made me want to tell stories for the rest of my life.
