This is a photo of me on my last day of a 2-week stay in the hospital when they finally took me of the IV line and I could brush my own hair. My arms are bruised from the Heparin shots, which I got in both arms twice a day, to prevent blood clots. Those shots were the easy part. #survivor

I went in for a procedure to clear out some post-surgical scar tissue that was causing me pain, and ended up having my colon resected for a 3rd time. Three days later, I developed a bowel obstruction and had to be put on IV fluids and nutrition, no food or drink allowed. I was constantly vomiting bile, which is foul and caused so much distress, I was made to put a tube down my nose and into my stomach, to vacuum it out. Five days after that, a dangerous internal hernia appeared with intestinal strangulation that warranted emergency surgery. I have never been in so much pain, where the morphine didn’t work, so much nausea where there was no reprieve. Were it not for my mother’s back rubs, my boyfriend’s kisses, the hand squeezes of the nurses (and gameshows to distract me,) I don’t know what I would have done. All I know is, I’ve made it through some shit. And I have the scars to show for it. And I am changed forever.
